Gnanam Committee

The Gnanam Committee, also known as the Committee on Restructuring of Higher Education, was a committee formed by the Indian government in 1993 to review and recommend changes to the higher education system in India. The committee was headed by Dr. T.G. Gnanam, and its main objectives were to improve the overall quality of higher education in India, increase access to higher education for disadvantaged groups, and promote research and innovation in the higher education system.

The committee recommended a number of changes to the higher education system, including the creation of new universities, the establishment of an accreditation system for institutions and programs, and the expansion of distance education programs. It also called for an increase in government funding for higher education, and for the establishment of a national commission to oversee and coordinate the higher education system.

The recommendations of the Gnanam Committee have had a significant impact on the higher education system in India, and many of its recommendations have been implemented over the years. However, some critics argue that the committee’s recommendations have not been fully implemented, and that there is still much work to be done to improve the quality and accessibility of higher education in India.
